Fredrik Nielsen explores a seductive tension between the lure toward rebellion and the expectations of society in WannabeKonst. Fredrik Nielsen’s (b. 1977) installation WannabeKonst rocks with rebellious attitude as glass sculptures twist on stands, graffi ti saturates the walls and music videos loop images of the artist at work. Several elements are performing within this installation which fl uctuate between challenging conventions of society and serving as an extension of a look and style unique to the artist’s own extroverted persona. Just as the walls of the gallery space brightly promote Nielsen’s personal contact information, his sculptures advertise statements such as “Dålig Smak 12,000 SEK” (Bad Taste) within the layers of glass to directly challenge aesthetic expectations and the constructed hierarchies of the art world. Th rough an ardent process of experimentation and colorful accessorization, Nielsen creates glass forms that completely destroy the ideas of standard normality. Instead, the unconventional emerges as a powerful statement; bad taste becomes a refreshing break from tradition that reaches out to alter the expectations of those viewing his work. Th e surrounding punk-like atmosphere compliments Nielsen’s chosen path to walk on the wild side. Rebellion, which carries its own seductive qualities, not only empowers his self-created identity as an artist, but it fuels a vision to transcend defi ned borders of society. In today’s over-mediated world, we are plugged into and turned on by the power of one-way transmissions that engage our interests through narration of sight and sound.
